‘Float like a butterfly; sting like a bee’
Before I even knew what boxing was about…I would hear my dad chuckle these words to himself. I was just a little kid and wondered ‘what float like a butterfly and sting like a bee…’ could possibly mean. I didn’t even know what butterflies were apart from the fact that they ‘float’ and that ‘bees ‘ sting. I must have been about three. You have to understand that I was a scaredy-cat and I hated all flying insects…to me they were ‘monsters’. But ‘float like a butterfly’ made me realise at a very young age that butterflies wouldn’t hurt me but bees will. Now, I absolutely love butterflies and bees terrify me!!
