So many colleges….forever learning…

What colleges have you attended?

So….growing up my dad really wanted me to be a lawyer….he believed I should study Classics as a first degree…then Law. So off I went to the University of Ibadan in Nigeria to study Classics…I did enjoy studying Latin in translation…was intrigued by the verb ‘to be’ sum, es, est, erunt, erabas and the tenses….all that paro, paras, parat, paraberunt (they will prepare) parabamas (you were preparing) parare (infinitive). I loved Latin….I remember reading the Iliad and the Odyssey in translation…..thinking I definitely want to write an epic poem. Then being introduced to Greek literature and absolutely loving Aristophanes. When I graduated I started an MA in Classics at the University College London because I really wanted to be a writer…..I got pregnant, deferred my course and never went back. No idea why….possibly I just didn’t want to be an academic.

Years later I studied Graphic Design at a local college, then went to the University of the Arts London to study Book Arts & Craft which I absolutely loved ….such a broad course photography…macro/micro lens….I loved the darkroom, processing my own film, creating photograms; printmaking introduced me to letterpress, etching, intaglio, screen printing, woodcuts and lino. Life drawing was just fun ….bookbinding, graphic design and computer aided design. I loved art school.

Graduated….kept being invited to Teacher Training….bluntly refused….I was a self employed artist without a day job….it was hard.

Finally I studied for a Diploma in Education & Training so I could teach post secondary school learners. However all that planning took me away from being a practicing artist…..it was too much.

Of all the courses I have studied the Teacher Training was the most tedious…..(for me)…. I most really hate long essays on pedagogy.

Art courses are the best! (for me). You never stop learning with art….so intriguing.
